»Tourism & Hospitality Skills Development
Author: Imelda Ndomo
Date: 24 May 17

Suitably trained and skilled workforce is essential to the well-being and development of the tourism sector. KTF continually assesses existing challenges in the industry and in this regard, has flagged technical skills gaps amongst the industry workforce as a key challenge. The solution entails a proper regulatory framework for tourism and hospitality training; with a harmonized, world class curriculum for tourism and hospitality training and accreditation of all training institutions providing such training. In 2014, Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) commenced the process of development of regulations to govern ‘Workforce Development & Training Accreditation’ in tourism; and consequently submitted the draft regulations to initial stakeholder validation in 2015.

»Industry Pushes for Tourism Recovery
Author: Imelda Ndomo
Date: 4 Aug 14

Tourism continues on a downturn for the second year in a row due to multiple factors, key of which is security incidents which have resulted in not only negative travel advisories against specific areas of the country but also negative publicity, causing uncertainty in the country’s source markets and leading to drop in tourist arrivals. This has seen booking cancellations and tremendous drop in forward bookings compared to last year, translating ultimately into huge losses for the economy, with the tourism industry as the immediate casualty as it grapples with low occupancy, drop in revenues against huge investment and operating costs; job losses as the labour intensive sector endevours to check operating costs; and loss of business for tourism suppliers, from the largescale manufacturers to the small scale enterpreneurs including curio dealers and vendors. In its engagement with Tourism Regulatory Authority which recently came into operation, KTF is pushing for the authority to address existing gaps in collection of tourism data to enable holistic capture of data and establish accurate figures on tourism contribution to the economy, which will in turn form basis for calls to government to accord tourism due recognition and support.

The forum held from 23rd – 27th June 2014 attracted over 1200 participants from over 162 UN member states. The forum could not have come at a more significant time as Kenya, as many other African countries, grapple with the growing challenge of poaching. Fittingly, Illegal Wildlife Trade was a key agenda item, and statistics released by UNEP and Interpol estimated that global environmental crime -logging, poaching and trafficking of a wide range of animals, illegal fisheries, illegal mining and dumping of toxic waste is worth up to US$213 billion annually, and helps finance criminal, militia and terrorist groups thereby threatening the security of many nations.
