Kenya Tourism Federation and Kenya Tourist Board hosted the inaugural Kenya tourism awards gala on Thursday, 23rd June 2011 at Carnivore. The glamorous occasion was graced by UNWTO Secretary General Dr. Taleb Rifai and the Minister for tourism, Hon. Najib Balala, as chief guests.

It was full capacity at the gala as the industry turned out in large numbers to celebrate together the strides that the industry has made, even in the face of many challenges especially in the last two years. Tourism set a new peak year in 2010, both in total tourist arrivals and receipts.
The Kenya Tourism Awards gala was occasion to recognize, celebrate and encourage best practices in sustainable tourism. Tourism businesses that have demonstrated their commitment to sustainable and best practices and emerged winners in their respective categories were recognized and awarded trophies to commemorate their achievement.
At the gala, the tourism industry also awarded the valuable contribution of the media to promoting destination Kenya. Among the winners feted at the Kenya Tourism Awards were journalists in print media, Television and digital media who demonstrated how in their work they have promoted the local tourism industry.
Created in the backdrop of improved performance by the tourism sector, the Kenya Tourism Awards celebrates and encourages this positive momentum, and encourages positive competition among tourism businesses in order to spur the growth of the sector, even to attain the sector goals outlined in Vision 2030.
The Kenya Tourism Awards is set to be an annual event and will be a highlight of the annual events calendar for the local tourism sector.
